Two GTA maps placed side by side do not establish which is larger unless their scales match. This guide explains how to check a comparison of Leonida, Los Santos or San Andreas without treating a fan reconstruction as an official measurement.
Start with provenance
Record where each map came from and which version it is. An official illustration, an in-game map, a promotional poster and a community reconstruction have different purposes and levels of detail.
Rockstar’s GTA VI hub now describes a Leonida map on the reverse of the Vice City Collection poster. That product description does not supply a measured area or automatically validate every map image circulating online. See our map guide for the source distinctions.
Use the same distance scale
If two maps have reliable distance references, convert each to the same pixels-per-distance scale before overlaying them. Resizing both to fit identical rectangles removes the very difference you are trying to measure.
Area changes with the square of a linear scale factor. If a drawing is enlarged to twice its width and height, its displayed area becomes four times larger. That is a property of the drawing, not proof that the game world grew.
Decide what counts as area
| Comparison choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Land only | Useful for comparing landmass |
| Land plus a defined water boundary | Depends on where that boundary is drawn |
| Traversable space | Requires evidence about actual access |
| Driving time | Changes with roads, traffic, vehicle and route |
Do not combine a land-only figure for one game with a land-and-ocean figure for another.
Separate measurement from reconstruction
The mapping project can help interpret landmarks and probable geography. Its estimates should retain a version and uncertainty label. A changed coastline in a later reconstruction can alter an area calculation substantially.
A useful comparison publishes its source images, scale method, boundary definition and date. Without those, a precise-looking percentage is hard to reproduce.
Bigger and denser are different questions
A larger outline does not tell you how many accessible interiors, activities or detailed neighborhoods it contains. Travel time also measures a different experience from raw area.
For the direct franchise comparison, read GTA VI versus GTA V’s map. Use this method to evaluate a claimed number before repeating it as an official result.

FAQ
Can you compare GTA maps by making the images the same width?
No. A size comparison needs a shared distance scale. Equal image widths can hide differences in the worlds.
Does a collector poster establish GTA VI's area in square kilometers?
A poster description alone does not establish a measured playable area or a reliable scale calculation.
